Sutter was one of my favorite Cubs in the late '70s. He was lights-out as the Cubs closer, with his split-fingered fastball. He was the only Cub reliever that gave me total confidence. When he came in, in my mind the game was over.
It was a major disappointment when the tight-fisted ownership traded him after the 1980 season, especially since he was dealt to the Cardinals. Seeing him win a World Series with St. Louis was not an easy thing to watch. The Sandberg game in 1984 made it a little easier, however.
I've got a total of 56 cards in my Bruce Sutter collection. Twenty are from his active days and the other 36 are since he retired.
These are his five Topps Cubs cards.
There are some Topps clones from OPC and Burger King.
He has one Topps sticker, from 1981.
The Fleer debut card and sticker sets both included Sutter.
He has several cards with Hostess and Kelloggs.
I've got Sutter's autograph and a relic from Greats of the Game 2006. The other relic comes from Tribute in 2010.
The rest of the non-active cards are in the mosaic below, in alphabetical order by brand. A listing of them is below the mosaic.

I was surprised that I don't have his 1983 Topps Super Veteran card, as I have a lot from that subset (both the Topps and OPC versions). Do you consider that a Cubs card? He's a Cub in the "then" picture and of course a Cardinal in the "now" picture.
ReplyDeleteI didn't consider it a Cub card since he was with the Cardinals when it came out. I checked the TCDB to see how they listed it and they have it as both a Cubs and Cardinal card. That's good enough for me -- I'll be adding it to my Cubs set.
DeletePretty funny that his debut Fleer card has him holding a bat. RIP.
ReplyDeleteI will always picture Sutter with that glorious beard... which is probably why I don't really associate him with the Cubs. He's a Cardinal first... then a Brave. The two Cubs cards that stands out to me are his rookie card and that 1980 Topps card.
