1998 Gold Label Cubs

Here's the debut cards from Topps Gold Label.  The set premiered in 1998 and I'm assuming was a high-end card.  There were just 100 cards in the set.  The card stock was thicker and the cards have a reflective look to them.  Thought there were 100 cards in the set, since each player has three different classes of cards, that would mean there are actually 300 cards total.

I've only concerned myself with the Class One cards.

The set includes four Cubs....

...Grace, Rodriguez, Sosa, and Wood. The set must have come out later in the season because of Wood's inclusion.  This was his rookie season

  1. 900 cards, actually, as each class has three levels. I have six of the nine Kerry Wood cards:
1998 Gold Label Class 1 Gold Label (the one you show)
1998 Gold Label Class 1 Black Label
    1998 Gold Label Class 1 Red Label (# to 100; I don't have this)
1998 Gold Label Class 2 Gold Label
1998 Gold Label Class 2 Black Label
    1998 Gold Label Class 2 Red Label (# to 50 I don't have this)
1998 Gold Label Class 3 Gold Label
1998 Gold Label Class 3 Black Label
1998 Gold Label Class 3 Red Label (# to 25)

  2. That being said, if anyone has a Red Label they'd like to sell I'd be very interested (but Paul gets first crack!).

  3. Lots of nice Ivy. I might have to revisit making a Cubs only Ivy Frankenset to go with my non-Cubs one.

  4. Gold Label was one of Topps best high end sets initially. Topps did get a little NUTS some years, making it tough to identify the class. Much better when stated on back. Would have been so much better to serial number class 2 and 3. Either way nice cards.

  5. Now THAT is what Gold Label is. Not the crap Topps released last year.
