Varied Colors - 1961

Now we're getting to some variations!

The 1961 set wasn't particularly colorful.  There was no big colored border or matte.  The colors showed up in a two-part band at the bottom of the card. The colors of the printing inside the band changed too, depending on the band's color.  And boy, did Topps use a variety of combinations.

Yellow, orange, green, red, and blue were used for the boxes, making a possibility of twenty different combinations.  Half of those combinations were used for the Cubs.

Yellow for the left box dominated, showing up on sixteen of the 26 cards.  The right box saw a three-way tie between green, orange, and red.

My design choice was not used by Topp for any Cubs card so I had to make my own...

... with red and blue boxes.

  1. Love this series of posts. Never took the time to appreciate all of the different color combinations Topps used on their 50's and 60's sets.
