Yesterday I showed the final varied color set, from 1990. Since we are 28 year out, I think it is safe to say that we will never see another.
I've run the totals for variation among Cubs cards and it looks like this:
1954 - 5 variations
1955 - 4 variations
1956 - 7 variations
1957 - 6 variations
1958 - 8 variations
1959 - 7 variations
1960 - 9 variations
1961 - 10 variations
1963 - 13 variations
1967 - 2 variations
1970 - 3 variations
1975 - 13 variations
1990 - 17 variations
You can see how Topps really ended this going all out, with 13 variations in 1975 and 17 in 1990. In fact, if you look at all the numbers, it seems that the number of variations grew over the years. You can discount the 1967 and 1970 sets as the variations were just font colors those years, not borders.
Most years saw the variations spread out among the different possibilities, with one exception.
In 1958 the set was very yellow-red heavy.
It's been interesting for me to see how Topps changed things up over the years. I hope you got a little something out of this too!
Great series of posts. I definitely learned a lot from them.
