The 1963 set was the last set with huge color variations until 1975.
Starting with the 1964 set and continuing through 1969, the colors varied by team.
In 1964 the Cubs were black and red.
In 1965, it was blue and red, a very wise choice.
In 1966, the Cubs became orange, and stayed orange in 1968 and 1969. Maybe Topps had the Cubs confused with the Bears.
The year I skipped is the year for this post, 1967. While the Cubs were still orange, Topps did vary the color of the player's name and position. They were either in all black or white name / yellow position. I'm not sure why the variation was made. It didn't make things any easier to read. It was just done.
Black won out over white/yellow by a better than 2:1 margin.
