Varied Colors - 1963

The eight-year string of varied colors on baseball cards ended in 1962.

The wood grain design was the same on every single card in the set.

But varied colors returned in 1963, in a big way.  The design had big splashed of color on the bottom of the card.  The band with the player's name, team, and position was one color.  The background of the smaller round player picture was another.

Colors used include red, yellow, blue, orange, and green.  As with the 1961 set, that makes for twenty possible combinations.  Of those, Cubs cards saw thirteen different combos.

This time we had a two-way tie for the most common, with red on the bottom for both and the circle background split between green and yellow.

And what should they all have been, in my humble opinion?

Blue and red, of course!

  1. Nice call. I'm also a fan of the Banks (red & light blue).

  3. Gosh, I didn't realize how much color was in the '63 set until now.
