2009 O-Pee-Chee Cubs

Not only did Upper Deck have an OPC insert set in 2009, they also created a stand-alone set.  They were going to milk the OPC name for all that they could get out of it.

The 2009 O-Pee-Chee set is made up of 600 cards.  The design has the look as if Topps 1976 and 1981 got together and had a child.

But here's where Upper Deck really failed.  When a collector hears "O-Pee-Chee" one of the first things that comes to mind is "Canada" or "French."  And that's what made the original OPC unique - the slight design variations and the inclusion of French.

Upper Deck did none of that.  Il n'y a pas d'écriture française sur les cartes.  There is no French writing on the cards.  Without the French it's just another unneeded set.  I would imagine that Canadian collectors would have been excited when they heard that there was going to be a complete OPC set and then disappointed that it didn't have the one thing that OPC was known for.

The 23 Cubs cards from the set are below.

  1. Gonna do the black borders now? They're sharp ... I loved this set. I completed it a long time ago and it's probably the last Upper Deck set I'll ever complete.
