Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 20,692 Cubs cards from 304 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1969 Sunoco Pin Billy Williams  This pin is listed in the Standard Catalog and the Trading Card Database as part of the 1969 Sunoco pin set.  I've always just accepted that.  But I looked a little deeper at the catalog listing and included in the Cubs set is Joe Pepitone, who didn't come to the Cubs until 1970.  The set also includes several Milwaukee Brewers.  The Brewers didn't exist in 1969.  So why is the set listed as 1969? Very strange.

1980s: 1988 Donruss Baseball's Best #225 Andre Dawson  The reigning NL MVP belongs in a set called Baseball's Best.  Other Cubs in the set include Al Nipper and Calvin Schiraldi.  They were not Baseball's Best.

1990s: 1998 Cubs Convention Harry Caray Harry passed away exactly one month after this card was given out at the Cubs Convention.

2000s: 2000 Finest #148 Kerry Wood  Wood looks really young in this picture. It would have been taken in 1998 since he missed all of the 1999 season.

2010s: 2017 Fire #9 Kris Bryant  The RNG was really grabbing the stars this week!  We have our second NL MVP and fourth Rookie of the Year.  We also got three Hall of Famers.

  1. Good spot--I don't understand how anyone could think creating a listing for a 1969 Milwaukee Brewers set makes sense! I was thinking maybe it was a promotion which started in 1969 and continued for another year or two, but if that were the case I'd expect the set to be much larger than it is. I think it's a flat-out mistake. PSA also lists them as 1969. Yeesh.
