Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 11,731 Cubs cards from 83 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

Today the RNG has come up with some very recognizable names...no "I never heard of this guy" today!

1950s / 1960s: 1953 Bowman #30 Phil Cavarretta The Chicago native was the face of the Cubs in the 1940s.  By the time this card came out in 1953, his playing time was just about finished.  He appeared in only 27 games for the Cubs, most as a pinch hitter.  But it wasn't just his age that led to the decline in games played....he was also the team's manager.

1970s: 1970 Topps #240 Fergie Jenkins  This is one of my favorite cards from one of my favorite sets.  Taken at Shea, its got a tough look on his face, along with the nice contrast of the blue on the road greys, and there's a great look at the baseball centennial patch.

1980s: 1989 Topps Stickers  #5 Andre Dawson  This sticker captures the viciousness of a Dawson swing.  He never seems to take a soft swing...always a wicked cut.

1990s: 1992 Studio #12 Andre Dawson  Back to back Dawson...awesome!  And we go from the vicious swing to a smiling, pleasant looking player.  That's something that was interesting about Dawson...he was a terror on the field, but a genuinely nice person off the field.

2000s: 2011 Topps #347 Darwin Barney  We finish with my guy, Barney.  This is his first Topps card and you can see that he's listed as a shortstop.  That was his position until Starlin Castro came along.  It's been second base for Barney since 2010 and I must say he made a pretty smooth transition.
