Riding, Red Hots, and Rain

I am fortunate to be in an area where there are five different Midwest League team within a couple hours drive.  It is also nice because there are bike trails near each of the ballparks.  That means Mrs. WW and I can combine two of our favorite activities, bike riding and baseball.

RIDING...We took a day trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana on Wednesday, which is about a 75 minute drive from our house.  Up first was a trip along a couple of Fort Wayne's Rivergreenway Trail system.

Our starting point was Johnny Appleseed Park, which also is right next to the location of the old ballpark in Fort Wayne, Memorial Stadium.  From there we rode along the St. Joseph River until we reached downtown.  We then headed east along the Maumee River and ended up in New Haven.  It was about a 12 mile trip.

A Diet Pepsi while resting in the shade was a nice break from the 90° sunshine.  We encountered a heavy headwind on the return trip, a wind so strong that it blew off my Cubs hat.  Back at the park, we rested, got cleaned up, changed clothes, and headed to dinner.

RED HOTS... Portillos, the popular Chicago hot dog chain, has been expanding outside Chicagoland and they opened a restaurant in Fort Wayne a couple of years ago.  It was just 10 minutes from the trailhead, so cleaned and refreshed, we drove over.

Mmmmmm.... I do love a good Chicago dog!

RAIN... After supper it was time to head to the ballpark.  We picked this game because the South Bend Cubs were in town.

Remember that headwind I mentioned earlier?  It was wind ahead of a storm front.  A severe thunderstorm watch was issued 15 minutes before game time and the game was delayed.  We found a bench in the concourse, took a seat, and waited.  And waited.  The rain came and after a 90 minutes, the game was cancelled.

Using our rain check, we got tickets to a game in late August, but the Cubs won't be the opponent.  We'll probably ride a couple of the other trails, have some Portillos, and hopefully get to watch a game.

  1. I don't know what I'm looking at with that hot dog. Is that tomato slices on a hot dog? If so, yuck.
