Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 16,743 Cubs cards from 197 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1963 Topps #309 Jim Brewer The 1963 season was Brewer's fourth and final season with the Cubs. It was also the only year he posted a winning record (though just barely) of 3-2.  His Cub career numbers are very bad. 4-13 with an ERA of 5.56.  He was traded to the Dodgers and would have a doze good years with them,

1980s: 1984 Topps #51 Jim Frey   He was hired as Cubs manager in October of 1983 so Topps had to act quickly to add him to the base set.

1990s: 1997 Team Issued #52 Ramon Tatis A rookie in 1997,  Tatis was a busy man.  He made 56 appearances, all out of the bullpen.  His ERA was a bloated 5.34, not good for someone out of the pen.  The Cubs left him unprotected and the Devil Rays took with as the 42nd pick in the expansion draft.

2000s: 2005 Upper Deck Reflections #159 Billy Williams This nice looking card is from Upper Deck's Reflection set.

2010s: 2017 Heritage #491 Jason Hammel The RNG picked a card of the recently-retired Jason Hammel.  He was signed by the Rangers to a minor-league deal over the winter.  He pitched well enough to make the team, and the promptly retired.  It was kind of odd.

  1. I was fairly surprised that the Cubs didn't pick up Hammel's team option following the 2016 season. He was a solid and dependable starter.
